The American man used cryptocurrency to support the terrorist organization ISIS for more than $180,000 and may be sentenced to more than 20 years in prison
Mohammed Azharuddin Chhipa, a 35-year-old man from Virginia, USA, was convicted by a U.S. federal court on 12/13 for using cryptocurrency to provide financial aid to the terrorist organization ISIS. From 2019 to 2022, Chhipa raised funds through social media and turned the funds into cryptocurrency to fund various wrongdoings and military operations of ISIS, including assisting ISIS members to escape from prison in Syria.
From fundraising to cryptocurrency transactions, funding ISIS terrorist jihadist operations
According to the U.S. federal court, from October 2019 to October 2022, Chhipa secretly raised funds through social media, provided electronic payments and cash donations, and even traveled hundreds of kilometers to collect cash, then converted the cash into cryptocurrency and sent it to Turkey, and then transferred it to support ISIS members in Syria.
Chhiba's main associate is a British-born ISIS member who raises funds to fund female ISIS escapes, terrorist attacks, and ISIS jihadist operations. Throughout the program, Chhipa sent out more than $185,000 in cryptocurrency.
Multiple charges are proven, with a maximum sentence of 20 years for each charge.
The U.S. federal court also ruled on 12/13 that Chhipa was charged with "conspiring to provide financial support to a designated foreign terrorist organization" and "providing material support," with a total of five charges, each with a maximum sentence of 20 years. Chhipa will be sentenced on May 5, 2025, and the actual sentence will be determined by the federal district court judge considering sentencing guidelines and relevant statutory factors.
